Texas Jamboree Recap

Day 1

Nolan Ryan vs Cullen

HCYA vs Cullen

Missouri City vs Black

Teague vs St. John

Grantham Academy Vs Westbury Christian

Dulles vs Albert Thomas

Albert Thomas came in the game as a 30-point favorite, but Dulles kept the game close most of the game. Albert Thomas size and physicality showed to be intimidating forcing countless turnovers for the young talented Vikings.  Vikings 24 tried to keep his team in it but Bonner and Bennett Killer B’s combination was deafing. While 14 of the Vikings tried to control the game to keep it within their reaches. The Albert Thomas pressed reaches far and near.

Welch vs Plummer

Day 2

Missouri City vs Plummer

The highly anticipated matchup between the two big man 43 of Plummer and 35 of Mo City has been less than stellar. The game really became a matchup between 22 of Plummer and 24 of Mo City. Both 24 and 22 traded baskets the first half keep the game close. 22 ended the half with 14 and 24 had 16 pts. Plummer came out making it a run in the second half defending and scoring… until Mo City settled down and began playing their game. The tide eventually turned toward and 24 showed why he is one of the top players in the city. Mo City made a run that Plummer never recovered from. Plummer’s team defense and 24; the offense of 1 and 43 made several attempts to bring them back… Mo City full court man defense was just too tough with the final score of 67 to 57.

Nolan Ryan vs HCYA

HCYA came in as the favorites, but Nolan Ryan didn’t seemed intimidated at all by the team’s history of National Championships. The crafty distributor #3 calculating up assists while 30 and 20 supplied the scoring for Ryan to take a early lead. HCYA’s  0 and 33 tried to keep the Warriors in the game. Ryan’s inside presence led by 00 is keeping the distance from HCYA.  HCYA kept working to keep it within reach but Ryan’s defense was too much. The score at the end of the game was 31 to 48 Nolan Ryan.

Black vs Teague

Teague 2-2 record didn’t show in the game against Black.  After 35 was injured, 33 and 2 led Teague by their aggressive play. Black’s 35 rebounded, defended and held the scoring, keeping the game within reach. 3 of Black continued to penetrate and kick to his shooters trying to balance to the scoring. Teague wins the game 43 to 36.

St. John vs Grantham Academy

This game was huge in terms of the hype with St. John’s Justice Winslow (son of Ricky Winslow) ranked # in the country and the big man #50 of Grantham Academy.

The game began a little slow, but it pickup when the 2 Marquee matchups got warmed up trading baskets.  Then the tone of the game changed in the 2nd quarter to become more defensive than an offensive driven game.  The last part of the first half Winslow took over the game the pushed his team to a 11 point lead. The quick and flashy #22 of Grantham Academy kept the pressure on St. John, dishing the ball to 50 for the bulk of the scoring. Winslow was too much for Grantham the final score was 36 to 26.

Port Arthur vs Dulles

This was an interesting matchup with Fort Bend’s Dulles who lost to the power Albert Thomas and the big and athletic Port Arthur. Dulles came out the shoot playing hard on both sides of the ball. Dulles jumped on Port Arthur making it tough to recover. Dulles played very disciplined as 24 led the scoring and block shots defending. 4 of Port Arthur scoring 6 of 7 total points in the first half making it tough to compete as the half ended 24 to 7.  Dulles continued to play well throughout the 3rd quarter with 14 leading in assists and 50 defending and slashing scoring. Port Arthur called a time out and came out pressing making a 10-1 run, but in the end  Dulles was too much for them with the final score 39 to 22.

Westbury Christian vs Albert Thomas

The Albert Thomas machine has been rolling since yesterday coming into this game with only one lost this season; Westbury is 3-2.  Nothing change on this day, the Albert Thomas defense was (Yates like) too much for Westbury. 20 controlled the game by dishing and scoring at will. Westbury made runs and played pretty good defense Albert Thomas just over powered the Wildcats. The Albert Thomas team slashed and rained 3’s, which took the wind out of the Wildcats.

Plummer vs Pin Oak

This is another Marquee matchup with some of the city’s best players.  Plummer comes out attacking the guts of Pin Oaks. Kendrick has been dominating the entire Jamboree and nothing changed in this game. Unlike in the earlier games 22 was having problem scoring with Pin Oaks stingy defense. Pin Oak knew they had to get Kendrick out of the game and they did by putting him in foul trouble early in the first quarter giving him a sit. Pin Oak took advantage keeping the game close. Sanders went to work to bring Pin Oak back from an 8-2 run to keep them in the game… until he received his 4th foul going into the half. After halftime Pin Oak went on a 6-0 run, putting Pin Oak within 2 forcing Plummer to bring Kendrick off the bench.  Even with Kendrick on the floor it could stop the push by Plummer. By 4th quarter Kendrick ruled the boards and Tyrone unleashed an offensive assault that kept them in the lead.

Welch vs Albert Thomas

This game was uneven from the start. Albert Thomas came out with that old Georgetown defense stopping every attempt to score. After a 8-2 opening Welch finally settled down but the defense was too much in the first half. Unfortunately for Welch they came out flat and Albert Thomas came out roaring. 11 distributing the ball and Roderick Bonner made it a personal showcase with his passing, scoring and defense. And the perimeter shooting of Bennett, the inside plays of 32 Wesley and reserves like 30 it was too much for Welch.

Fondren vs Hartman

The final matchup of the night both teams athletic, but Hartman came out pressing and Fondren had something for them. Hartman has the height with 13 leading the scoring accounting for most of the points in the 1st quarter. Fondren countered with balanced scoring with 35 leading the young squad. This was a battle going back in forth, until Fondren took a lead with multiple fast breaks going on a 6-0 run. Hartman made a run in the 4th to get within 2… then took the lead. Fondren within 10 seconds came back, knock down the free throws, 23 stole the ball and 2 hit the shot at the buzzer to win the game. That was an excellent end to the first Middle School Jamboree.
